Concept 2 Development

The staggered cockpit ads an element of interest to the vehicle, and allows the passengers to sit closer together reducing the surface area that is cutting through the air.

I've opted to use wheel covers in order to not only disguise the small 16" wheels, but help the air flow over the unsprung weight.

Over all the design will have a sporty and contemporary style with a hint of classic hot rod feel to it.

3 Concepts

Concept 1:

An open wheeled "bug-like" design

Concept 2:

The open wheeled roadster solar car
Concept 3:

A dual staggered cockpit design

After discussion in class I've decided to go ahead with concept 2. The open wheeled roadster design shows the potential to develop into a fast and classic looking vehicle. The open cock pit separates it from other vehicles and ads a sporty look and feel to the vehicle.

Aurora Solar car early development

These are some of the Sketches from the early stages of development:

The staggered cockpit was an attempt at stepping away from the "norm" and tying something different, while still maintaining a large flat surface area with lots of room for solar panels.
With these concepts I was looking at drawing influence from insects and developing more organic shapes.
These Designs are where I began to draw inspiration from open wheeled roadsters and hotrods.
With this page I was looking at using the solar panels as a graphic on the surface and trying to take advantage of the open spaces between the wheels while maintaining an open wheeled appearance.
